Simona Halep loses only three games, gets indisputable victory against fellow Romanian Gabriela Ruse

Transylvania Open’s no. 1 seed Simona Halep, currently world no. 18, has had a perfect debut in Cluj, 6-1, 6-2 against Gabriela Ruse, in their first ever official match. This was also Simona’s 15 consecutive win against a fellow Romanian.

Coming back to play in a home-based tournament after a 5 year break, Simona has displayed a very good form. She was always in control, had no hesitations, and hit intensely and harsh. Her focus is telling us that she has high expectations for Transylvania Open.

First set was completely dominated by the former world no. 1. She started strong and quickly earned a five game lead. It was the first time when Gabi Ruse managed to keep her service game, but then Simona immediately took the set.

The second one was more balanced, because Gabi realized she has to be proactive. Ruse stayed better in the rallies, but all her efforts found appropriate answers on the other side of the net, so the outcome was under no doubt. Simona closed the match with some great shots after only one hour and 14 minutes.

In the second round she will face Varvara Gracheva (WTA 81), who ousted Andrea Petkovic on Tuesday. This will be their first ever encounter.
